Feminism in Latin America and Ecuador

Actualizado: 22 sept 2020

"And the fault was not mine, because of where I was or how I dressed"

⁃ phrase of the feminist movement of Chile

This movement is inspired by women who had been suffering from racism, they did not feel comfortable with the sexual perception of them, abused and raped women.

At the end of the 19th century, Mexican, Brazilian, Argentinean and Venezuelan women from the urban well-to-do sectors met to publish newspapers in which they explained their ideas about what they were about men, shared their stories and poems, and shared news about men. fashions and manners.

Latin American feminism is a claim identification process.

The participation of indigenous peasant women and workers in their struggle against the conquerors in colonial times was great but it was never recognized.

The machismo and racism that was inherited by the colony did not allow women to be recognized, but rather put women in a rather low class: white, mestizo, indigenous and black, they shared nothing more than their gender and male abuse in their homes.

In Ecuador, various stories and women stand out in its history.

During the years of the revolution in Ecuador, the first feminist milestone that occurred was the principle of female democracy, that is, women could vote, thanks to Matilde Hidalgo known for being the first woman to vote for the first time in the country. (May 10, 1924).

Ecuador, due to its lack of education for most people, is a country with a high number of mistreatments of women. Gender violence is defined as any type of physical, psychological or sexual violence.

I, Juan Simón Delgado, as a 20-year-old Ecuadorian, have experienced a number of feminist events, including: demonstrations demanding justice for murdered or disappeared women. Even once on television I was able to see a march by Ecuadorian feminists calling for the legalization of abortion.

In my opinion these movements contribute and insist on a social change of equality, which is good, the only thing I am against is when these demonstrations turn violent. Ecuador is a third world country but it is impressive how its society is open to evolve.
