Feminism in Germany has two sides. On the one hand Feminism is very important to many people, men and women, and it is also very supported among big parts of the society. On the other hand, feminism has reached a point where many people do not see a reason for feminism to be important anymore because they think that Germany has reached gender equality.
Gender equality to me means that men and women play the same role in society, have the same chances and are considered as equals in every manner. So I ask myself, how can there be gender equality when only 9.2 percent of the management positions in companies that are listed on the stock market are taken by women? How can there be gender equality when approximately 25% of the women who have children younger than 6 are taking time off work and only 2 % of men who have children younger than 6 do the same. How can there be gender equality when women have to deal with catcalls all over the world while men almost never get molested in the streets by women?
As you can see, I do not believe that there is gender equality in Germany and therefore I do not believe that Feminism is overrated, I believe that it is underrated.
As a young woman myself, who wants to be taken seriously and who wants the same chances in life as my male peers get, I have a very strong connection to Feminism. I feel very blessed to live in a country that has already gone through many changes towards a more equal society. I also feel blessed that I live in a country where the overall situation is so well that we have the time and the resources to promote and fight for gender equality. But I also believe that there is still a long way ahead of us in order to achieve full gender ewuality.
