The paradox of Instagram

Actualizado: 14 oct 2020

I think most of users in Instagram may agree that Instagram's censorship is really contradictory sometimes.

A post of a woman in her underwear is considered delicate and too graphic but a video of man swallowing pills or shooting animals is not. It confuses me.

I understand how hard it might be to establish common rules for millions of accounts. My interests might be really different from a person in India and still we are under the same orders.

But sometimes it oversteps the limits of censorship.

A pregnant woman called Taylor Giavasis got a video deleted for no reason. She recorded her pregnancy journey as well as her labour and the moment she gave birth. But you could not see nothing more than her belly or her underwear. She finally got her video back, yet there is a warning sign of too graphic/violent content right before you click the post.

On the other side, the account of the multimillionaire Dan Bilzerian has never been cancelled. He posts videos of huge weapons, women completely naked -almost pornographic- and they remain there as if he did not have 32 million followers.

Thankfully, a movement of respond to this absurd censorship has been sprung up the past years. People started to claim their rights to post pictures of their bodies.

#freethenipple has been one the most famous.

Feminism is also about accepting and promoting women feeling proud of themselves.

Oversexualizing female body is the main problem in Instagram.
